5 Simple Steps to Staying Hydrated

We all know that we’re supposed to drink water to stay healthy, right?  

But Why?  

Here’s Why...

Water is what makes us tick.  Water aids in processes in our body like digestion, detoxification, and temperature regulation; it also helps to improve our skin tone and helps to control our calorie intake.  It’s essential to great health.

Here are the questions I hear allllll the time:

How much water do I have to drink?

How much water is too much?

When I increase my water intake, I cannot stop peeing!!!

But what if I don’t like water?

Here are our top 5 tips for staying hydrated everyday but especially as the mercury rises in the summer months!

1. Make it a habit.  

    How do you do this?  Keep a water bottle (that you LOVE) or glass jar close to you at all times so it’s always accessible and then track your water intake!  There are a number of great ways to make this simple.  There’s an app for that!  You betcha there is, there’s a few actually.  My Fitness Pal is easy to use, as is Fitbit.  It may seem really tedious at first but soon enough it will become as second nature as walking and breathing...Promise!

2. Make it taste good.

    And no, I don’t mean by filling it with sugary drink mixes!  Infused water could possibly be my most favourite thing ever and it is SO simple to whip up.  Take your biggest pitcher or jar or other dispenser and fill it with glorious, fresh water and then add some of your faves, leave it in the fridge and the longer it sits, the more flavourful it will become.  There are tons of combinations, and some that you may never have thought of that will have added health benefits in addition to just tasting fantastic.  Pinterest is an excellent place to start.

3. Never Leave Home Without It.

    Yes, just like Visa.  No matter how long I expect to be away from home, I always fill my 25 ounce double walled stainless steel bottle to the top so I’m ready to rock no matter what.  This practice ties into making it a habit so it may take some reminding for the first while but soon enough it will be part of the leaving home ritual along with double checking the flat iron and setting the alarm.

4. Focus on Hydration Not Just Drinking More Water!

    Here’s the scenario you may know all too well; you drink and you drink and you drink and ALL you do is make one trip after another to the washroom, like clockwork!

Here’s the thing with our water today; the majority of the water we drink has been stripped of it’s fabulous minerals.  The water cooler at work, bottled water, that fancy RO tap next to your sink...they all claim to provide H2O but it is not the H2O that your body desires or needs.  So, when you are drinking and drinking and drinking, you are not actually hydrating.  Just because it’s wet and it looks, smells and tastes like water, it’s not doing the same job as water.  What’s the solution to this madness you ask?? Simple.

Add a smidge of himalayan pink salt to your water bottle!  I find that 1/4 teaspoon per 25 ounces is still mild tasting enough that I don’t feel like I’m taking in water from the Atlantic!

5. Avoid Excess Caffeine.

    Caffeine is a diuretic; drinking excessive amounts of iced coffees and hot coffees is not going to help your case of staying well hydrated!  I’m a huge coffee lover so I will not be cutting it out of my life anytime soon, so I will not tell you to either.  You’re welcome.  However, I will say that excessive amounts of high caffeine drinks should definitely be avoided.  Have a coffee in the morning, enjoy it, savour it but don’t drink that whole pot!  Reach for your tasty infused water instead during your day.  When you want to hit the coffee shop drive through, opt for a cold brewed fruit tea sans sweetener! WAY more refreshing.

So there you have it, my top 5 simple tips for staying well hydrated everyday and especially as the temps climb through the summer!
